How can you network effectively as an entrepreneur?

Table of contents

If you’re getting started as a young entrepreneur, a strong network can really get you started. But networking is more than just handing out business cards. It’s about building relationships that can lead to collaborations, opportunities and growth. Sounds good, right?

So, how do you start networking? Start by making a genuine connection. People like sincere conversations, so be honest and show interest. Ask questions, listen carefully, and look for common ground. This lays a solid foundation for a long-lasting relationship.

As an entrepreneur, it is also important to show yourself. Dare to share your ideas and passions. When you put your beliefs and goals on the table,

you will attract people who share the same values and are eager to collaborate. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a bit of storytelling?

Set a goal

A specific goal helps you to network in a focused way. Make a list of people or companies you want to reach and think about how they can help you. This makes your networking efforts strategic and effective. Don’t forget that networking is a two-way street; also think about what you can contribute.

At PLNT, we support startups at every stage, from idea to growth. Setting networking goals goes hand in hand with developing a business plan, so you can realize your business vision.

The art of following up

A common mistake is not following up with contacts. After a meeting, it is important to send a message. Thank them for their time and refer to the conversation. This strengthens the relationship and creates opportunities.

A follow-up does not have to happen immediately after the meeting, but make sure it happens within a reasonable time frame. This shows your commitment. Keep in touch regularly, for example by sharing updates about your company.

At PLNT, we understand the importance of succession and offer guidance to help build strong relationships. Mentorship is a powerful tool in our program to help you achieve this.

Networking in the digital world

Online networking offers enormous opportunities. Platforms such as LinkedIn are perfect for making contacts and expanding your network. Make sure you have an up-to-date profile that showcases your expertise and achievements.

Social media can also be a powerful tool. Share valuable content, respond to others, and participate in discussions. This strengthens your online presence and can lead to new connections. Consistency and authenticity are important here.

At PLNT, we encourage the use of digital resources. Our platform regularly offers online events and workshops to strengthen your network and learn new skills.

Avoiding common networking mistakes

Entrepreneurs often make mistakes when networking that can hinder their efforts. Talking too much about yourself without listening to the other person is one of them. Strike a balance in your conversations and listen actively.

Another mistake is forgetting to follow up. As discussed earlier, staying in touch is essential for building relationships. Make sure you stay in touch, even if there are no immediate business benefits.

Don’t expect too much from every networking event. Not every meeting will immediately lead to collaboration, but it can yield valuable connections. Avoid these pitfalls and make your networking activities a success. Read more about the role of an incubator in the early startup phase to see how PLNT can support you in this.
