RespectFarms Opens Its First Cultured Meat Farm in Schipluiden!

June 26, 2026

Earlier this month, RespectFarms officially opened the world’s first cultured meat farm in Schipluiden. This is a monumental milestone in the transition to a more sustainable food system and living proof of what happens when groundbreaking ideas are given the right conditions to thrive.

The Opening

The official opening day in Schipluiden drew a full house of guests from all over Europe, including farmers, researchers, policymakers, and members of the media. The opening speeches were followed by a symbolic highlight when the two daughters of dairy farmer Corné van Leeuwen cut the official ribbon. The program also featured presentations by cultured meat pioneer Dr. Mark Post and philosopher Koert van Mensvoort, after which the RespectFarms founding team shared their vision. The afternoon concluded with tours of the facility and ample networking opportunities for attendees.

About RespectFarms

RespectFarms is a pioneer in the integration of cultured meat production on farms and acts as a systems integrator that connects agriculture, technology, and biotechnology. The Netherlands-based company collaborates with livestock farmers, scientists, and partners in the food industry to design sustainable, decentralized models for the future of meat production.

“Consuming animal products at current levels is not sustainable within the planet’s carrying capacity. So we need to find other ways to meet our dietary needs within the Earth’s capacity, with as little impact as possible on animals, people, and the climate, and with a future for livestock farmers. Et voilà: the cultured meat farm,” says Ruud Zanders, co-founder of RespectFarms and Kipster.

What is cultured meat?

Cultured meat is produced by growing animal cells in a controlled environment, rather than raising and slaughtering animals. Small tissue samples, such as muscle cells, are placed in bioreactors with carefully controlled nutrients, oxygen, and temperature, allowing them to grow into real meat. This method aims to produce meat with a significantly lower social and environmental impact by using less land and water and emitting fewer greenhouse gases compared to traditional livestock farming.
