The innovation center PLNT in Leiden will as of now have annual financial support from the municipality of Leiden. This center, located on the Langegracht since 2016, offers startups a platform to innovate and grow. Thanks to an initiative by council members Arie Roest (VVD) and Sander van Diepen (D66), 150,000 euros has been made annual available to support PLNT through 2029.
Collaboration for innovation and growth
Many of the startups that get a place in PLNT grow into thriving companies that provide innovative solutions to current and future challenges. They also create new jobs in the area. To ensure that PLNT can continue to fulfill this role in the coming years, additional funding is needed for the entrepreneurial program.
The foundation already works closely with Leiden University, Hogeschool Leiden, mboRijnland and the business community. Until recently, PLNT lacked a structural financial contribution from the municipality. Council members Roest and Van Diepen have addressed this problem and provided an annual contribution, allowing PLNT to continue its important work.
Future-focused entrepreneurship
Sander van Diepen emphasizes the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship: “Students see the opportunities and challenges of the future. They must be given the space to grow and innovate.” PLNT provides that space and supports students and budding entrepreneurs in developing their ideas and building a successful business.
Arie Roest adds, “This is the place to give startups professional guidance, facilities and access to budget. PLNT contributes to Leiden remaining ‘the city of discoveries’ also in the future.” The startups that begin at PLNT often grow into successful companies that create new jobs and contribute to the local economy.
The incubator for and of changemakers
With the additional funding from the municipality, PLNT can continue to serve as an incubator for changemakers. The people who challenge the status quo with innovation and entrepreneurship in Leiden.
The center provides entrepreneurial skills, a valuable network and the facilities needed to establish an innovative startup. Through the joint efforts of educational institutions, the business community and the municipality, PLNT remains an essential part of Leiden’s innovation culture.
